Why Remembering Names is So Important

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the New York Press Club's annual conference at NYU.  The crowd there ranged in both age and experience, and while a lot of the sessions covered stuff I already knew, the nuggets I did walk away from made the experience worth my time.

As with college, the most valuable lesson for me from this experience came from outside of the classrooms.  As I was sitting down to the awards luncheon, I look over to introduce myself to the others at the table, and the first person to extend his hand turned out to be a former intern of mine from WCAV in Charlottesville, VA.

"You won't remember me, but I interned for you one summer at WCAV."  His name was Reuben, and while I didn't instantly recognize his face, the moment he said his name the light bulb clicked on.  Indeed he did intern for us in Charlottesville and I do remember him... fortunately!

When I was 13-years-old, I met Washington, DC anchorman and legend Gordon Peterson. What impressed me so much about that meeting was the fact he actually remembered my name throughout the course of the day.

I wish I could say that I have always been so diligent.  Remembering names has always been something that I struggle with.  As time moves forward, I realize how important doing something so simple really is.  It may not make the difference between getting a job or not... but the weight it carries in the grand scheme of life, can be much greater.

As New York legend Gabe Pressman addressed the collective at the Press Club's Awards Luncheon, I posted a few pictures of him online.  The first person to comment, remarked how impressed he was of Mr. Pressman's ability to remember his name after just one day on the job at WNBC.

While it may seem "old school" in this day of twitter handles and electronic communications, the significance of such a small act, should never be lost upon future generations.
